Bequest Max Horkheimer

Max Horkheimer, along with Theodor W. Adorno the foremost representative of the Frankfurt School, bequeathed an outstanding academic legacy on his death in 1973. A year after his death, the former Stadt-und Universitätsbibliothek received around 250.000 pages of archival documents as well as 16.000 volumes of his comprehensive private library.

A decision was made to digitalise the entire legacy because of increased international academic significance and for reasons of preservation. A part of the material will be made accessible online here - in accordance with the existing copyright and archival rights -of which there are several thousands of letters of the representative of the critical theory and the Frankfurt School, which have not been unpublished to date.

The publication of the digital copies with texts from Theodor W. Adorno, Ludwig von Friedeburg, Hendryk Grossmann, Jürgen Habermas, Otto Kirchheimer, Leo Löwenthal, Herbert Marcuse, Alexander Mitscherlich, Franz Neumann und Siegfried Kracauer were reproduced by kind permission of Ellen von Friedeburg, Institut für Sozialforschung an der Goethe Universität Frankfurt am Main, Peter-Erwin Jansen, Susanne Löwenthal, Jürgen Habermas, Peter Marcuse, Jan Philipp Reemtsma, Suhrkamp Verlag.
