The object in lading the following sheets before the public; is mainly intended to assist the new be­ginner the more readily to acquire information in the english and german languages. The importance of acquiring a knowledge of German Literature is be­coming more enhanced every day -this is evident from the more than ordinary attention, which of late;

United States; in every part which was settled by germans, the german language had to give way tc the english, & has been in a great measure going down ever since, in no very agreeable ratio/to german schol ­ars, and to many germans who have had a predilec­tion in favour of their mother tongue. This cannot be attributed to any disrespect into which the german language had fallen ; but was principally to be attri­buted to the manner,in which theJudicial proceedings of our courts ol law were and stili are transacted. We derived our code of laws from the enedish, and as a necessary consequence the idiom was retained, and is now incorporated with the Judicial Proceedings of our courts. Notwithstanding the disuse of the ger­man language injudicial proceedings it is now gaining* importance with the literati!/ and a leading consider­ation with the polite scholar; every day brings evi­dence of these truths. In bringing this work for­ward the author does not arrogate to himself, as be­ing the author of something new, neither, will he disclaim the credit entirely to originality.
